Rescue teams in eastern Libya recovered five decomposed bodies believed to be migrants.
Authorities and crews found the remains 550 kilometers south of Tobruk in the Great Sand Sea.
Workers moved the remains to Tobruk, the Red Crescent confirmed.
Abreen, a local aid group, said the bodies likely belonged to Sudanese migrants.
Migration Routes Filled with Danger
Libya’s borders and long Mediterranean coast make it a main gateway for migrants seeking Europe.
Migrants escaping poverty and war often risk land and sea journeys from Libya.
In December, 61 people drowned off Zuwara’s coast.
In May, seven Sudanese migrants died after their vehicle broke down in the desert.
Rising Migration and European Response
The IOM estimated 787,000 migrants and refugees lived in Libya in 2024.
The UNHCR said 32,400 people crossed to Europe from Libya in 2021, twice the 2020 total.
In April, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged raising Frontex staff by 30,000.
Officials said the move could strengthen Europe’s border security.
