Millions of Americans face frigid temperatures and heavy snow as Arctic air sweeps across the central and eastern U.S.
Arctic Air Brings Dangerously Cold Winds
Bone-chilling Arctic air is gripping the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Temperatures are plunging to single digits and teens, with wind chills reaching as low as -30°F in some areas. The National Weather Service warned that frostbite could occur on exposed skin within 10 minutes.
By Saturday morning, 196 million Americans will wake to freezing temperatures. States from Texas to Florida and New York will see temperatures drop 10-20°F below seasonal averages.
Snowstorms Disrupt Travel and Create Hazards
Heavy snow is slamming the Great Lakes and Northeast. Erie, Pennsylvania, could see up to 50 inches of snow by Sunday, with parking and travel restrictions in place. In western New York, bans on commercial vehicles and mobilized snowplows aim to keep roads passable, as some areas brace for 6 feet of snow.
Detroit officials warned drivers of icy roads, urging caution during Black Friday shopping. Michigan State Police closed parts of Interstate 696 to salt the roads.
Airports and South Brace for Arctic Blast
Airports across the Midwest and Northeast are deicing planes to prevent delays. Freeze warnings are in effect from Texas to Florida, with temperatures expected to dip into the low 30s. Floridians are urged to protect plants, pipes, and vulnerable individuals from the cold temperatures.
Forecasters also warn of hazardous travel as snow falls at rates of up to 5 inches per hour. Drivers across the Great Lakes are urged to prepare for life-threatening emergencies if stranded.
