Real Sociedad claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Athletic Club in one of the most dramatic Basque derbies in recent memory, sealed by Jon Gorrotxategi’s last-gasp winner in stoppage time.
Played in torrential rain and relentless intensity, the match swung back and forth before Gorrotxategi, making his derby debut, smashed home the decisive goal in the 92nd minute. The Real academy product from the border region of Gipuzkoa described hitting the ball with his “soul” as teammates and fans erupted in wild celebration.
Earlier, Ander Barrenetxea had provided the opening goal in remarkable fashion—hobbling back onto the field injured, he crossed for Brais Méndez to score just seconds later. Gorka Guruzeta equalised for Athletic before Gonçalo Guedes restored La Real’s lead with a fine finish after the break. A chaotic scramble then saw former Sociedad player Robert Navarro bundle in a second leveller for the visitors with 11 minutes left.
But the final word belonged to Gorrotxategi. His initial scuffed shot found its way back to him, and this time he thundered it into the net to spark scenes of pure euphoria at the Reale Arena.
The win was Sociedad’s second in a row, easing pressure on new coach Sergi Francisco after a difficult run. “I hit it with all my soul,” said Gorrotxategi. “For the situation, the moment, it’s unbelievable. Something clicked tonight.”
As the players sang with supporters after the whistle, the victory felt like a turning point — a release of weeks of frustration and a reminder of why this Basque derby remains one of football’s most passionate rivalries.
