New national climate plans from over 60 countries would cut global emissions by only 10% by 2035, far below what’s needed to limit warming to 1.5C, a UN analysis shows.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell said progress was being made but warned that “we need far more speed” to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
Major emitters China and the EU have yet to submit updated plans, and the US pledge under Joe Biden may not stand if Donald Trump withdraws from the Paris deal again.
The findings come ahead of Cop30 in Brazil next month, where leaders will be pressed to strengthen commitments and boost funding for developing nations.
Experts say the report underscores a growing gap between climate promises and real action, with one analyst warning that “progress is not fast enough to deliver the Paris goals.”
