Officials Examine Possible Coordinated Activity
Danish authorities reported drones over four airports from late Wednesday into early Thursday, triggering concerns of a deliberate and coordinated operation. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the flights as systematic and likely executed by a professional actor. Intelligence officials noted patterns resembling other recent European drone incidents and suggested potential Russian involvement, though no responsible party has come forward.
Disruptions at Civilian and Military Airports
The airports affected included Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Skrydstrup. Aalborg, which also serves military functions, faced the longest flight interruptions, while Skrydstrup, home to Danish fighter jets, experienced similar delays. The drones reportedly had their lights on, but authorities refrained from engaging them. Officials confirmed that the public was not in immediate danger during the events.
Denmark Plans Expanded Drone Defenses
In response, Danish authorities are considering new legislation to allow critical infrastructure operators to neutralize unauthorized drones. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is coordinating with NATO and EU partners on regional security measures, including discussions of a potential “drone wall.” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated that the flyovers appeared intended to instill fear and division, emphasizing the need to reinforce protections at strategic locations.
