The portal’s launch coincides with Trump intensifying his campaign against what he calls “fake news,” as he faces rising criticism for attacking journalists. The White House introduced a media “Hall of Shame” on its official website, delivering another significant strike against press freedom in the United States. Officials described the site as “fully sortable and routinely updated,” claiming it prevents any alleged hoax, anonymously sourced report, or partisan attack from disappearing unnoticed.
Portal Targets Mainstream Outlets
The portal names The Washington Post as “Offender of the week” and also targets The New York Times, CNN, CBS News, and The Independent. The site lists alleged “claims” tied to specific publications and reporters, categorizing them across various themes. Accredited agencies such as the Associated Press and Reuters also appear, with officials citing “bias” and “omission of context” for one and “lie” for the other. Additional categories include “circular reporting,” “failure to report,” “false claim,” “malpractice,” “mischaracterisation,” “misrepresentation,” and “left-wing lunacy.”
Critics Warn of Democratic Risks
Matt Murray, executive editor of The Washington Post, condemned the targeting of journalists as an attack on constitutional rights and promised continued rigorous reporting. Conservative media watchdog MRC welcomed the site, arguing that Republicans must identify media “on the other side.” Experts speaking to DW cautioned that this rhetoric threatens journalists and endangers press freedom and democracy. The website’s introduction comes as Trump strengthens his fight against so-called “fake news” and faces backlash for insulting journalists, often women, with demeaning remarks.
