Thousands Protest in Valencia Demanding Mazón’s Resignation

A fourth demonstration took place in Valencia on Saturday, as thousands of citizens marched to demand the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón. Protesters accused his government of mishandling the deadly floods that struck the region in October, killing 224 people.

More than 200 civic, social, and trade union groups organized the demonstration. Though smaller than the previous three protests, officials estimated that around 25,000 people participated.

Protesters held signs, chanted slogans, and urged the regional government to take responsibility for its failures. Many accused Mazón of delayed responses that worsened the disaster’s impact.

Government Criticized for Slow and Disorganized Response

Mazón faces immense public pressure after his administration failed to issue timely flood alerts to citizens’ cellphones. Residents received emergency warnings only hours after the flooding had already begun.

Critics also condemned the slow and chaotic response by authorities. Thousands of volunteers were the first to assist flood victims, arriving before government aid reached the hardest-hit areas.

It took several days for officials to mobilize police reinforcements and soldiers. The regional government had to request emergency assistance from central authorities, further delaying rescue operations.

Residents facing a long and expensive rebuilding process say the government has been slow in delivering aid. Many families remain without sufficient support to recover from their devastating losses.

Mazón Defends His Government’s Actions

Mazón, a member of the conservative Popular Party, has repeatedly defended his administration’s handling of the crisis. He insists the flooding’s scale was unforeseeable and blames insufficient warnings from central authorities.

Despite his statements, public anger continues to grow. The protests reflect widespread frustration over the government’s delayed response and lack of support for flood victims.

With thousands left homeless and entire neighborhoods destroyed, citizens demand urgent action. The movement against Mazón’s leadership is gaining momentum, with further demonstrations likely in the coming weeks.
