The United Nations General Assembly on Friday strongly endorsed a nonbinding resolution supporting a two-state solution.
The move came only hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of a Palestinian state.
Out of 193 members, 142 nations supported the New York Declaration, while 10 opposed and 12 abstained.
Declaration Outlines Governance and Security
France and Saudi Arabia introduced the resolution, which envisions the Palestinian Authority governing all Palestinian territory.
It calls for creating a transitional administrative body after a ceasefire in Gaza.
The text demands Hamas end its control in Gaza, surrender its weapons, and release all hostages.
UN-Backed Mission Proposed
The resolution also proposes deploying a UN-backed mission to shield Palestinian civilians and guarantee safety for Israelis.
It supports transferring governance to the Palestinian Authority peacefully and monitoring both the ceasefire and any future peace agreements.
It condemns Hamas’ October 7 assault on southern Israel and Israel’s siege and starvation tactics in Gaza.
The resolution frames these measures as essential steps toward lasting peace in the region.
