Tesla Recalls 700,000 Vehicles Due to Tyre Pressure Warning Issue

Tesla has announced a recall of nearly 700,000 vehicles over a problem with the tyre pressure monitoring system. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the warning light may fail to stay illuminated between drive cycles, potentially leaving drivers unaware of low tyre pressure. This increases the risk of accidents caused by underinflated tyres.

The affected vehicles include the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y. Tesla plans to issue a free software update to resolve the issue, with notification letters to be sent out by February 15, 2024.

Recalls Continue to Plague Tesla’s Cybertruck

This recall marks the seventh for Tesla’s 2024 Cybertruck, which has faced several challenges since its release. Tesla delivered the first Cybertrucks in November 2023, two years later than initially planned. Just last month, the automaker recalled 2,400 Cybertrucks for unrelated issues.

Tesla has dealt with significant recalls throughout the year. In July, over 1.8 million vehicles were recalled due to a hood latch issue that posed a crash risk. In February, nearly 2.2 million vehicles in the US were recalled because of inadequately visible warning lights on instrument panels.

Software Updates: Tesla’s Recall Remedy

Tesla continues to rely on over-the-air software updates to fix recall-related problems, minimizing inconvenience for vehicle owners. CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining quality control while scaling production, particularly with the expansion of the Cybertruck lineup.

Although Tesla’s use of software fixes often simplifies recall resolutions, the frequency of recalls has sparked criticism. Regulators and vehicle owners are keeping a close eye on the company’s efforts to address quality issues while managing its rapid growth.
