A ski lift accident at Astún resort in the Pyrenees injured ten people, with two suffering serious injuries. Emergency responders acted quickly to assist those affected.
Immediate Response to Ski Lift Failure
On Saturday, a ski lift at Astún resort in Aragón malfunctioned, causing passengers to fall into the snow below. Initial reports suggested 35 injuries, but officials later revised the number of people involved to 30. Among them, ten required hospital treatment. Two individuals were critically injured, while two others needed urgent care. Six passengers were treated for minor injuries, and 20 were cleared at the scene.
Miguel Ángel Clavero, head of Aragón’s emergency services, attributed the accident to a failure in the lift’s return system, which disrupted tension. Rescuers, including firefighters, Guardia Civil officers, and resort workers, promptly evacuated those stranded on the malfunctioning lift.
Witnesses Recount the Terrifying Incident
Survivors shared their harrowing experiences. María Moreno, who was on the lift, described the moment the accident occurred: “We heard a loud noise, and then we fell straight down while still in the chair. The chair bounced several times, leaving us shaken and injured. Some people fell out of their seats.”
Moreno added that others sustained more severe injuries as parts of the lift struck them directly. Another witness said, “It looked like a cable snapped, and suddenly the chairs began shaking violently, throwing people through the air.”
Coordinated Emergency Efforts
Emergency teams acted quickly after the incident. Five helicopters, 14 ambulances, and a mobile medical unit were deployed to the resort. Authorities closed the ski station and requested visitors leave the area to ensure rescue crews could work efficiently.
Jorge Azcón, the regional president of Aragón, visited the site to oversee rescue operations. Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his condolences and pledged support. “I am deeply saddened by the accident at Astún and have offered the government’s full assistance,” he said.
Investigation and Calls for Better Safety
The resort remains closed while authorities investigate the cause of the ski lift malfunction. Experts are examining the mechanical failure and considering safety improvements to prevent future incidents.
The accident has raised concerns about ski lift maintenance and the importance of stricter safety measures at winter resorts. Meanwhile, the injured are receiving care, and recovery efforts continue as officials work to address the aftermath of this tragic event.
