Health Experts Recommend Plant-Based Oils Over Butter
A new study suggests that replacing butter with plant-based oils may improve health and reduce the risk of early death. Researchers analyzed the diets of 221,000 U.S. adults over a span of 33 years. Their findings indicate that high butter consumption is linked to an increased risk of mortality, while plant-based oils offer potential health benefits.
Health Impact of Fats: Key Findings
The study revealed that individuals who consumed the most butter had a 15% higher risk of death. In contrast, those who consumed the most plant-based oils experienced a 16% lower mortality risk. Substituting butter with plant oils was associated with a 17% reduction in overall death risk.
Researchers found that olive oil, soybean oil, and canola oil were linked to a lower risk of cancer and heart disease. However, corn and safflower oils showed no clear benefits. The study did not include palm or coconut oils, which are high in saturated fat.
Experts Advocate for Plant Oils Over Butter
Health experts highlight that plant-based oils contain unsaturated fats, which may help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. On the other hand, butter contains saturated fats that raise LDL cholesterol, a key factor in cardiovascular disease.
Despite concerns raised by wellness influencers regarding seed oils, experts assert that these claims are not backed by scientific evidence. They clarify that many processed foods containing seed oils are unhealthy due to high sodium and refined carbohydrate content, rather than the oils themselves.
Study Limitations and Considerations
While the study indicates significant health benefits of plant oils over butter, researchers acknowledge certain limitations. Participants who consumed higher amounts of butter were more likely to smoke, be obese, and exercise less. Although the study adjusted for these factors, lifestyle differences could still influence the results.
Professor Tom Sanders from King’s College London advises individuals to choose plant-based oils over butter for long-term health benefits. He emphasizes that making small dietary changes can contribute to a lower risk of chronic diseases.
