A deadly shooting occurred at Risbergska School in Örebro on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of approximately ten people, according to police. The suspected shooter was also killed. Several others were injured, with six transported to the university hospital. Four of them suffered gunshot wounds. Two are in stable condition, one remains in critical condition, and two sustained minor injuries.

Authorities confirmed that no children or police officers were among the injured. However, officials are still working to confirm the exact number of victims. The attack took place around 12:30 PM in Örebro, about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm.

Swedish broadcaster TV4 reported that police searched the suspect’s home in Örebro. The alleged shooter, around 35 years old, had a legal gun license and no previous criminal record. However, police have not yet provided further details about his background or motives.

Immediately following the attack, law enforcement secured the area and urged residents to stay away from the Västhaga district. Inside the school, security forces detected smoke, which delayed the evacuation process. Once the threat was under control, authorities began safely removing students.

Police believe the shooter acted alone. Investigators have classified the case as attempted murder, arson, and a serious weapons offense. However, they have ruled out terrorism as a motive, according to Örebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest. Large numbers of emergency personnel, including police, firefighters, and medical teams, were deployed to secure the area and assist the injured.

Teacher Maria Pegado recalled the terrifying moment when the attack unfolded. Shortly after lunch, someone suddenly burst into her classroom and ordered everyone to leave. “I took my 15 students, and we ran,” the 54-year-old told Reuters. Moments later, she heard two gunshots. “Fortunately, we escaped just in time.”

Outside, the severity of the situation became clear. “I saw people carrying the wounded out of the building. First one, then another. That’s when I realized how serious it was.” The shooting took place on a campus that houses multiple schools for children and adults.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the incident as “extremely serious” and assured the public that the government is closely coordinating with the police. He stated that authorities are taking all necessary steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his condolences on X, calling it “a painful day for Sweden.” He stressed that no one should ever have to fear for their life in a school. Additionally, he urged the public to allow police to conduct their investigation without interference.

King Carl XVI Gustaf also released a statement, extending his sympathies to the victims’ families. He praised emergency responders for their quick and courageous actions. Calling the event a “dark day” for Sweden, he acknowledged the bravery of those who worked to save lives.
