Expanding AI Infrastructure Nationwide
OpenAI, in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, is advancing its Stargate initiative with the addition of five new data-center projects across the United States. The planned locations include Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and another Midwestern site yet to be finalized. With these facilities, the program’s total projected computing capacity is expected to reach around 7 gigawatts, supporting a long-term investment plan that could total up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure.
Distribution of Roles Among Partners
According to the consortium, Oracle will lead the construction of three new centers, while SoftBank will oversee two. This latest phase brings the Stargate program’s overall commitments close to $400 billion. Company leaders describe the partnership as crucial for scaling the next generation of AI, combining Oracle’s expertise in cloud and data-center operations, SoftBank’s network capabilities, and OpenAI’s technological development.
Economic and Resource Implications
The projects are projected to generate tens of thousands of jobs, including both construction positions and permanent operational roles. Local governments are beginning to review proposals for zoning, incentives, and utility connections. Experts warn that facilities of this scale will demand significant electricity and water resources, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. Supporters argue that despite these challenges, the Stargate initiative will strengthen U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence while providing economic benefits to the regions hosting the new centers.
