Microsoft has announced plans to create 550 new engineering and research positions at its Dublin office over the next three to four years, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI).
The new roles will cater to both private and public sector organizations worldwide, focusing on a range of areas including software engineering, product management, design, program management, analytics, data science, security research, applied sciences, and technical writing. Currently, 120 of these positions are open for applications.
Investment to Enhance Ireland’s AI Development
Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its AI capabilities in Ireland has been positively received by the Irish government, particularly amid the growing emphasis on artificial intelligence in recent years. IDA Ireland, the country’s foreign direct investment body, has expressed strong support for this initiative.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris commented on the announcement, stating on Microsoft’s website: “This not only highlights Ireland’s appeal as an investment destination but also promises a significant boost for the AI ecosystem in Ireland. Developing AI skills and enhancing capabilities in this area are central to the Government’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, and this project will cultivate new specialist skills and expertise, positioning Ireland for further investment in this critical sector.”
James O’Connor, the site leader for Microsoft Ireland, emphasized the transformative nature of AI, stating: “AI is one of the most transformative technologies of our time—it will unlock profound possibilities for people, industries, and society. Through this investment, we build on our nearly 40-year presence in Ireland, which has evolved from a manufacturing site to a major international hub for Microsoft, encompassing software development, engineering, data centers, finance, operations, and sales and marketing for the EMEA region.”
O’Connor also noted that Ireland has established itself as a center of engineering and cybersecurity talent, thanks in part to its universities producing some of the finest graduates. This talent pool has significantly contributed to Microsoft’s ongoing success and investment in the region.
