Wildfire Destroys Homes and Displaces Residents
A fast-moving wildfire, the Franklin Fire, has devastated parts of Malibu, forcing thousands to flee. The fire began late Monday, spreading rapidly and consuming homes, vehicles, and land. Among those evacuated were actor Dick Van Dyke and his wife.
Local resident Linda Michel shared her terrifying experience. She woke to find flames nearing her property, barely managing to release her horses before her barn burned down. Firefighters have struggled to contain the blaze due to strong winds and rugged terrain.
By Tuesday evening, the fire had scorched over 2,800 acres and destroyed at least seven structures. Authorities have issued evacuation orders for thousands of residents as the fire continues to grow.
University Students Take Shelter Amid Flames
Pepperdine University students sheltered in place overnight as the fire approached. Campus libraries and student centers provided refuge for hundreds of students.
Student Nick Gerding described a tense but orderly atmosphere, with students waiting for updates while praying and supporting each other. Classes and finals have been canceled, and students will be permitted to leave campus on Wednesday.
Fire crews remain on-site to monitor spot fires and protect the campus from further threats. The university’s shelter plan has been coordinated with fire officials to ensure safety.
Harsh Conditions Fuel Fire’s Spread
Strong Santa Ana winds and dry air have worsened the fire’s intensity, creating dangerous conditions across Southern California. Winds gusting up to 40 mph have made firefighting efforts challenging, though they are expected to weaken by Wednesday afternoon.
California officials have declared a local emergency and secured federal aid to combat the fire. As displaced residents seek shelter and firefighters work tirelessly, the community remains hopeful for relief in the coming days.
