Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that significant updates will reshape Google Search next year. Speaking at the New York Times DealBook Summit, he emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving profound shifts in technology, with search capabilities poised to evolve dramatically. “We are in the earliest stages of a profound shift,” Pichai said, signaling that these changes are just the beginning.

Transforming Search with Advanced AI Models

AI advancements will make Google Search smarter and more capable in handling complex queries. According to Pichai, AI models are improving at reasoning and performing actions reliably, with notable progress expected over the next few years.

“We’ll be able to tackle more complex questions than ever before,” Pichai said. He also promised noticeable changes as early as 2025, adding, “I think you’ll be surprised even early in ’25 by the kind of newer things Search can do compared to where it is today.”

These developments align with Google’s dominant position in the search engine market, where it commands nearly 90% of global market share, according to StatCounter.

Google has already implemented several AI-driven updates in 2023. In May, it introduced AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. However, these summaries initially faced criticism for inaccuracies, including bizarre suggestions like eating rocks or using glue in recipes.

To address these issues, Google refined its AI systems to rely more on authoritative sources, such as Healthline and RunnersWorld, instead of community platforms like Reddit. A study by SEO platform SE Ranking in June confirmed this shift toward more reliable expertise.

Beyond search, Google recently unveiled a groundbreaking AI model capable of outperforming the world’s leading weather prediction systems. This new model even identified extreme weather patterns, despite not being specifically trained for such tasks.

Next-Generation AI to Shape Google’s Future

Looking ahead, Pichai highlighted Google’s plans to launch its next generation of AI models. “I just think there’s so much innovation ahead,” he remarked, expressing enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

As AI continues to evolve, Google is committed to pushing the boundaries of technology. These upcoming updates aim to make search more intuitive, precise, and capable of addressing complex user needs, setting the stage for transformative advancements in the digital landscape.
