M23 Rebels Close In on Goma

The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is gripped by turmoil as M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwanda, advance toward Goma. This city, home to about three million people, including displaced individuals, is nearly encircled. Fierce battles rage in Sake, a critical town 25 kilometers away and the last defensive point before Goma.

Fatalities Among Peacekeepers in Renewed Fighting

Violent clashes near Goma have led to the deaths of nine South African peacekeepers, including two from the UN mission MONUSCO. The South African military confirmed these losses, while earlier UN reports indicated injuries to nine soldiers. In response, the UN Security Council has organized an emergency session to address the escalating violence.

The European Union, African Union, and United Nations have strongly condemned the attacks. EU foreign policy representative Kaja Kallas criticized Rwanda for its alleged military involvement, describing it as a breach of international law and Congo’s sovereignty. Despite denials from Rwanda, Congo and UN experts accuse the country of arming the M23 rebels.

Natural Resources at the Heart of the Conflict

Eastern Congo’s vast mineral reserves, particularly coltan, play a significant role in the conflict. Coltan is essential for producing electronics and electric vehicle batteries. The M23 rebels control coltan extraction in areas they have seized, fueling both their operations and the regional instability. Initially focused on North Kivu province, the group has expanded its reach into South Kivu, where UN peacekeepers withdrew last year.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

The rebels recently captured Minova, a strategically important town, and briefly controlled Sake before Congolese forces countered. Artillery attacks launched from surrounding hills have placed civilians in Goma in danger. UN peacekeepers are assisting Congolese forces to protect residents caught in the conflict.

The violence has displaced over 400,000 people in the last three weeks, according to UN estimates. Many lack access to food, clean water, and medical care. Fearing Goma’s potential fall, thousands have fled across the border into Rwanda.

The growing humanitarian and security crisis in eastern Congo demands urgent international attention to prevent further devastation and restore stability.
