A rescue operation is underway after a wooden dinghy capsized near the Greek island of Crete. The accident occurred 12.5 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos. Coast guard vessels, coastal vessels, and helicopters from the navy and Air Force are assisting in the rescue.
ERT reported one confirmed death and 39 survivors transported to Paleochora in Kandanos-Selinos municipality. Reports estimate around 80 migrants were on board when the boat capsized.
Challenging Conditions for Rescuers
A man showing signs of drowning was evacuated to Chania Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care. Winds measuring five on the Beaufort scale have hindered rescue operations.
Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining missing individuals as authorities comb the area.
