Rudy Giuliani erupted in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, accusing Judge Lewis Liman of bias after his request to delay a January trial was denied in a $148 million defamation lawsuit.
The former New York City mayor and disbarred attorney shouted, “Every implication that you’ve made is against me!” during the tense hearing. The trial stems from a case brought by two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, whom Giuliani falsely accused of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Liman questioned why Giuliani had not yet transferred the title of a 1980 Mercedes convertible to the plaintiffs, as previously ordered. Giuliani retorted that he had applied for the necessary documentation but claimed difficulties in obtaining the title. “What am I supposed to do, make it up myself?” he exclaimed.
The judge dismissed Giuliani’s claims of financial hardship, noting insufficient evidence to support assertions of being cash-strapped. Giuliani argued, “I’m not impoverished… Everything I have is tied up,” adding that he has no car, credit card, or liquid assets. Liman warned Giuliani against further outbursts, saying, “Next time, he’s not going to be permitted to speak, and the court will take action.”
The trial, scheduled to begin on January 16, will determine whether Giuliani can retain certain assets while appealing a previous judgment. These assets include his Palm Beach condo and sports memorabilia, such as Yankees World Series rings that Giuliani claims belong to his son.
Liman rejected Giuliani’s request to delay the trial to attend Donald Trump’s January 20 inauguration, dismissing it as insufficient grounds for postponement. However, the judge offered to reschedule the trial to conclude before the event.
The case follows a $148 million damages award to Freeman and Moss by a Washington, D.C., jury after Giuliani was found liable for defamation. The plaintiffs testified about harassment and threats from Trump supporters incited by Giuliani’s false claims.
The fiery court exchange adds to Giuliani’s ongoing legal and financial woes, as he faces mounting challenges in the fallout from his role in contesting the 2020 election.
