Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stepped down as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, aiming to concentrate on Italy’s national stability and governance.

Announcement at Party’s Annual Youth Event

Meloni made the announcement during her Brothers of Italy party’s annual youth festival in Rome. The event drew over 300 attendees, including members of the opposition and Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati. Meloni emphasized that political stability is key to Italy’s credibility both domestically and internationally. She expressed confidence that her government, now in its second year, will complete its full term.

Morawiecki to Take Over ECR Leadership

Meloni announced her support for Poland’s Mateusz Morawiecki as the new leader of the ECR group, signaling a smooth transition of leadership. This decision allows Meloni to shift her focus more fully to her role as Italy’s prime minister while maintaining influence within the European conservative movement.

Lebanon Acknowledges Italy’s Role in Regional Stability

During the event, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised Italy’s role in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, crucial for upholding the region’s ceasefire agreement. He stressed the importance of international cooperation for maintaining long-term stability.

Mikati also highlighted the EU’s role in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis, advocating for efforts to support the safe return of refugees to their homeland.

Meloni’s resignation from the ECR leadership reflects her commitment to strengthening Italy’s political stability while ensuring her party continues to play a significant role in European politics.
