German Ambassador Warns of Threats to US Democratic Institutions

German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis warned in a confidential report that Donald Trump’s second presidency could severely weaken US democratic institutions.

In his report to Berlin, Michaelis expressed concerns that Trump’s policies would erode the independence of Congress, law enforcement, and the media.

The report, addressed to Germany’s Foreign Ministry and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office, was sent last week and later accessed by German media, including dpa.

Michaelis anticipated a significant shift in power dynamics, with Trump centralizing authority in the presidency at the expense of other branches and states.

Concerns Over Constitutional Changes and Political Stability

Michaelis described Trump’s agenda as aiming for “maximum disruption” and the dismantling of established political systems and bureaucratic structures.

He suggested that Trump’s plans for retribution and reorganization could lead to a redefinition of the United States’ constitutional framework.

The ambassador expressed concern that this would create unprecedented concentration of power in the executive branch, potentially destabilizing the country’s democratic balance.

Germany Maintains Focus on Alliance with the US

Germany’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment directly on the leaked report, citing its policy of not discussing internal analyses or embassy communications.

However, the ministry emphasized the importance of the United States as one of Germany’s closest allies.

“The American people elected President Trump in a democratic process. Naturally, we will continue to work closely with his administration in Germany’s and Europe’s interests,” the ministry said, according to dpa.

The report underscores Germany’s cautious approach as it prepares to navigate its relationship with the US under Trump’s leadership, while closely monitoring developments in American governance.
