Gen Z Faces Rising Job Struggles: Why Companies Are Firing Them Soon After Hiring

Many Generation Z employees are finding it difficult to stay employed, with several companies firing them shortly after they’re hired. A recent survey by career platform Intelligent revealed that employers are hesitant to hire recent graduates due to issues related to professionalism, communication, and work ethic.

The Skills Gap: What Gen Z Is Missing

Born between 1997 and the early 2010s, Gen Z is entering a workforce that isn’t fully prepared for their arrival. Experts suggest that while this generation excels in academic performance and extracurricular activities, they often lack the practical skills needed in the workplace. UC Berkeley’s Holly Schroth explains that many Gen Z workers struggle with basic workplace interactions and etiquette, which can hinder their success in professional environments.

Why Are Gen Z Workers Being Let Go?

A significant portion of the survey respondents—around 60% of hiring managers—reported that they had to fire recent college graduates. The most common reasons cited were lack of professionalism, poor communication, and a failure to manage workloads. Gen Z employees are also often unprepared for the more autonomous, unstructured environment of a workplace compared to their academic experience. Some also rely on parental support during their job search, with 70% of young job seekers admitting they ask their parents for help.

How Gen Z Can Improve Their Job Prospects

To improve their chances of success, recent graduates are advised to focus on developing initiative, professionalism, and real-world experience through internships or part-time jobs. Employers also value candidates who manage their social media presence appropriately and avoid discussing politics in a work setting.

Despite the challenges, Gen Z still makes up over 25% of the workforce. With proper training and support, they have the potential to thrive in professional environments.
