Online Posts Spark Investigation

Shannon Atkins, a 46-year-old man from West Palm Beach, was arrested for allegedly making threats toward former President Donald Trump. On January 19, the FBI received a tip from a Florida resident about Atkins’ troubling posts on Facebook. These posts mentioned past assassinated presidents and advocated violence against Trump.

One post reportedly said, “Bullets, please. Jesus save America.” Another stated, “I hope and pray someone kills him. We haven’t had an assassination in years.” West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo described the messages as violent and politically charged rhetoric targeting Trump.

Police stopped Atkins near his home on January 20, just before 7 p.m. Officers found suspected cocaine in his possession during the arrest. Atkins admitted writing the Facebook posts but claimed they were jokes.

Chief Araujo dismissed this explanation, saying, “Threats like these are no laughing matter and must be taken seriously.”

Atkins now faces charges for making written or electronic threats to kill, harm, or commit terrorism, a second-degree felony. He also faces felony charges for drug possession. Investigators did not find any weapons, and it remains unclear whether Atkins owns any firearms.

Federal Involvement and Next Steps

Atkins remains in custody without bond as the investigation continues. The Secret Service has been notified and will decide if federal charges are appropriate.

Atkins, who previously owned a bakery now listed as permanently closed, has not yet hired an attorney, and the court has not announced a hearing date.

Chief Araujo emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “Law enforcement will act swiftly to address threats against public officials and ensure the safety of the community.”
