The Eiffel Tower, a global icon, is in better condition than many experts initially anticipated, as revealed by its managing company president, Jean-François Martins, on Tuesday. Despite earlier concerns over possible rust damage, the monument’s structural integrity remains solid, thanks to high-quality construction materials and ongoing restoration efforts. As the 20th repainting project nears completion, Martins emphasized the tower’s resilience, particularly highlighting the preservation of its original iron during renovations.

Structural Stability and Renovation Progress

The Eiffel Tower, which was constructed between 1887 and 1889, is currently undergoing its 20th repainting project, slated for completion by 2026. The effort, estimated at a cost of 80 million euros, has been a major undertaking, especially given delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the delicate task of removing lead-based paint. During the restoration work, one section of the tower had its layers of paint removed, revealing the original metal. Experts were pleased to find the iron underneath to be in excellent condition, confirming the durability of the materials used by Gustave Eiffel.

“The tower is in remarkably good condition,” said Jean-François Martins, stressing that the high-quality materials used in the construction had allowed the structure to withstand the test of time. This positive assessment has been a relief to many, following earlier concerns about rust damage that had sparked labor strikes demanding better funding for the monument’s upkeep.

Investments in Restoration and Preservation

Significant investments have been made not only in repainting but also in the tower’s overall restoration. A complete refurbishment of one of the Eiffel Tower’s three elevators was carried out, costing approximately 58 million euros. The renovation was done with careful attention to historical accuracy to ensure the elevator retains its original charm while meeting modern standards of safety and functionality.

Additionally, there are plans to reinstall a replica of the Olympic rings on the tower, in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, although a clear timeline for this has yet to be finalized. Visitor Satisfaction on the Rise

The restoration efforts have not only enhanced the tower’s structural integrity but have also positively impacted visitor experiences. A recent survey revealed that 96% of visitors expressed satisfaction with their visit, a significant improvement from 81% in 2019. This increase in satisfaction is attributed to the ongoing improvements in facilities and services, as well as enhanced security measures.

Incidents of theft and aggression around the Eiffel Tower have notably decreased, thanks to increased police presence and tighter security protocols. These efforts have helped visitors feel safer and more comfortable during their visits, further boosting the tower’s reputation as a top tourist destination.

In 2023, the Eiffel Tower welcomed 6.3 million visitors from over 150 countries, reaffirming its status as one of the world’s most visited monuments. French and American tourists accounted for the highest number of visitors, with Germans rounding out the top three. The tower’s ability to attract visitors from across the globe speaks to its timeless appeal and the success of ongoing restoration and security improvements.
