Newsom Pledges Court Challenge
Governor Gavin Newsom announced that 300 members of California’s National Guard have been sent to Oregon under orders from President Trump. He criticized the deployment as an overreach of federal authority and said the state will pursue legal action to halt the move. According to Newsom, the administration is using California troops to bypass a judicial block on deploying Oregon’s own Guard.
Federal Judge Blocks Oregon Troops
The deployment comes after U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut issued a temporary restraining order preventing 200 Oregon Guard members from being sent to Portland. The order, effective until at least October 18, cited constitutional concerns about the use of military personnel for domestic law enforcement purposes.
Troop Arrivals Reported, Federal Confirmation Pending
Oregon officials reported that over 100 California Guard members arrived late Saturday, with additional forces expected. The Pentagon has not publicly acknowledged the deployment, and state leaders said they received no formal notice. The situation has heightened tensions between state officials and the Trump administration over presidential authority to mobilize National Guard units across state lines.
