President Joe Biden has issued a “full and unconditional” pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, concerning his federal gun charges and tax evasion conviction. This decision, made public on Sunday, marks a notable departure from earlier statements in which the president had said he would not use his executive powers to intervene in his son’s legal issues.
A Change of Heart
Hunter Biden, who faces sentencing for the gun charges on December 12 and tax charges on December 16, has been embroiled in multiple legal battles. In his statement, Joe Biden acknowledged that despite his initial commitment to refrain from interfering with the Justice Department, he felt it was necessary to act in the face of what he deemed an “unfair” and “selective” prosecution of his son.
Hunter Biden was convicted in June for purchasing a gun in 2018 while falsely claiming he was not a drug user on the purchase form. The president argued that the charges against his son were unusually harsh and motivated by political opposition, given that similar cases rarely result in felony convictions.
