Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ, Austria’s 2025 Eurovision winner, publicly called for Israel to be excluded from next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. Speaking to Spanish media, the 24-year-old artist expressed disappointment over Israel’s ongoing participation amid the Gaza conflict. His statement has intensified debate around Eurovision’s voting system and political neutrality.
JJ’s Call to Exclude Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
JJ won Eurovision 2025 with his operatic ballad Wasted Love, narrowly beating Israel’s Yuval Raphael, who performed New Day Will Rise. Raphael’s entry received strong public support, winning the popular vote in 34 out of 38 countries and Spain’s top 12 points. However, JJ questioned the fairness of the voting process.
In an interview, JJ said, “It is disappointing to see Israel continue in the competition while conflict rages.” He urged Eurovision to reconsider Israel’s participation, calling for reforms to ensure fair play and ethical standards.
Concerns Over Voting Transparency
JJ also raised doubts about the televoting system, saying, “This year, the voting was very strange.” He supports demands from Switzerland’s 2024 winner Nemo for Israel’s removal and greater transparency in vote counting.
Several broadcasters—including Spain’s RTVE, Ireland’s RTÉ, Belgium’s VRT, and Finland’s Yle—have requested independent audits of the voting process. RTVE specifically called for a review after awarding Israel the highest score, suggesting possible irregularities.
Political Leaders Support Boycott Calls
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez publicly supported JJ’s position. Sánchez compared Israel’s situation to Russia’s exclusion following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He said, “We cannot allow double standards in cultural events. Israel should face similar consequences.”
Israel’s Yuval Raphael Responds with Gratitude
Yuval Raphael, who survived the 2023 Nova music festival attack, expressed gratitude after securing second place. On Instagram, she wrote, “We did it! I’ve never felt so strong!” Her response contrasted with the ongoing controversy.
Eurovision’s Neutrality Under Pressure
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, maintains a strict policy of political neutrality. So far, it has not responded to JJ’s comments or the calls to exclude Israel from the contest.
The debate raises important questions about Eurovision’s future role as a cultural event amid global conflicts. Transparency in voting and clear participation rules are increasingly under scrutiny.
