Austrian Chancellor Nehammer Resigns After Failed Coalition Talks

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation after coalition talks with the Social Democrats (SPÖ) collapsed. The failure to reach a deal leaves Austria heading toward new elections amid growing political uncertainty.

Coalition Negotiations Break Down

After the unexpected withdrawal of the liberal Neos party on Friday, Nehammer’s conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the SPÖ continued efforts to form a government. However, discussions broke down over disagreements on key policy issues. “We have tried everything, but an agreement on key points is not possible,” Nehammer told Austrian broadcaster ORF. He emphasized that without a clear path forward, forming a government would not benefit Austria’s future.

Neos leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed disappointment, stating that “fundamental reforms” were unattainable in the talks. She officially ended her party’s participation in the coalition discussions, citing a lack of progress.

Fresh Elections on the Horizon

The political deadlock comes after other parties refused to form a government with the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ), which won the September elections with 29.2% of the vote. This left the ÖVP and SPÖ struggling to secure a majority with a smaller coalition partner.

With the collapse of the talks, Austria is now expected to hold new elections. The FPÖ, whose support has surged in recent polls, welcomed this development. A Der Standard survey shows the FPÖ’s backing has risen to 35%, positioning them as the likely frontrunner in the upcoming vote.

Nehammer’s resignation signals a significant turning point in Austrian politics, as the country prepares for elections that could reshape its political landscape and strengthen the FPÖ’s influence.
