During the Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced enhanced military support for Ukraine. He assured continued assistance, even as Germany approaches federal elections.
Increased Defence Support and Deployments
At the press conference following the meeting, Pistorius reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Ukraine. “Germany will stand with Ukraine, regardless of the election outcome on February 23,” he stated confidently.
Germany plans to bolster security at a major logistics hub by deploying two Patriot missile units and 200 soldiers to Poland. These troops will operate under NATO for six months, reinforcing the alliance’s regional stability.
In addition, Germany will deliver three IRIS-T SLM and SLS air defence systems and 13 Gepard tanks to Ukraine. Further support includes additional IRIS-T missiles, originally reserved for the Bundeswehr, which will soon be transferred to the Ukrainian military.
Navigating Uncertainty in International Cooperation
The group also examined how Donald Trump’s impending U.S. presidency might impact global support for Ukraine. Pistorius emphasized the necessity of maintaining the Ukraine Defence Contact Group’s efforts under the new administration.
If the United States opts to discontinue the current framework, Pistorius urged the creation of an alternative to ensure continued international coordination. He underlined the importance of sustained global efforts to back Ukraine.
Germany’s latest commitments showcase its dedication to Ukraine, even in the face of evolving political landscapes. The decisions made at Ramstein underscore Germany’s readiness to adjust and maintain its leadership in supporting Ukraine’s defence.
